Commercial vans
Van Jumpstart, Transit to Sprinter
About 5 minutes to read
A van that will not start is rarely just an inconvenience. It is a day of deliveries, a crew waiting on site or tools locked in the back. Vans also punish weak kit. A diesel van engine needs far more cranking current than a small car, and a set of thin leads or a small car jump pack can flatten itself without turning the engine over once.
We carry heavy duty jump packs for commercial vans, whether that is a Transit, Sprinter, Vivaro or Crafter, and we are long wheelbase capable. This page explains what happens when you call us about a van, the faults that are specific to working vans, and how fleet billing works if you run more than one.
For model-specific battery guidance, see Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter and VW Transporter. If the battery itself has failed, see van battery replacement.
What happens when you call about a van
- 1
Tell us the van and where it is
Make, model, fuel and whether it is long wheelbase or high roof. A yard, a customer driveway or a site compound with an exact location or a WhatsApp pin gets the right booster out first time.
- 2
Honest quote before we set off
You get the price on the phone before anyone travels. There is no callout fee, and you are not committed until you agree.
- 3
Boost with a heavy duty pack
We connect a booster sized for commercial diesels to the correct points, whether the battery is under the bonnet, under the cab floor or under a seat, and start the van.
- 4
Battery test and charging check
Every callout includes a battery test and a check of the charging system, so you know whether the van will start again tomorrow or whether the battery has had it.
- 5
Replacement on the spot if needed
If the battery has failed, we can supply and fit a branded replacement suited to the van, with warranty included, and take the old one for recycling. Many modern vans need the new battery registered to the vehicle, which we do where the manufacturer requires it.
Why vans go flat
Working vans drain batteries in ways cars usually do not.
| What you see or hear | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Short multi drop runs all day | Lots of starts, little driving between them to recharge | Longer runs when possible, and a battery test if starts are getting slower |
| Tools, chargers or lights running from the van | Extra drain with the engine off | Run accessories only with the engine on, or fit a separate supply |
| Van parked up over a weekend or holiday | Alarms, trackers and modules slowly drain the battery | Start and run it regularly, or disconnect accessories while parked |
| Slow cranking on cold mornings | A battery near the end of its life | Get it load tested before it strands you |
Van specific mistakes
- Using a small car jump pack on a large diesel and draining it without a start.
- Clamping to the wrong point on a van where the battery sits under the floor, instead of the marked jump points.
- Fitting a cheaper battery of the wrong type to a start stop van, which then fails early.
- Leaving inverters or tool chargers connected overnight.
- Carrying on with slow starts for weeks until the van will not start at all at the worst moment.
How to jump start a van
To jump start a van, park the donor vehicle or jump pack close without the vehicles touching, switch everything off and find the battery or the jump points. On many vans the battery sits under the cab floor or the driver's seat, with dedicated positive and earth points under the bonnet. Connect positive first, then earth to bare metal away from the battery, start the van and let it run before disconnecting in reverse order.
Diesel vans need more current than most cars to turn over, especially on cold mornings, so a small car-sized pack often is not enough. If the van starts but is flat again the next day, the battery or charging system needs testing rather than another jump.
Vans and fleets
We handle commercial and fleet vans, and business accounts can use fleet billing so you are not paying on a card for every callout. We are open 24 hours from our base in Oldbury, with especially strong response times across the West Midlands and a wider network across the UK, subject to driver availability. Response times vary by location and time of day, so call to confirm.

Q.Can you jump start a long wheelbase van?
Yes. We are long wheelbase capable and carry heavy duty jump packs for commercial vans.
Q.Which vans do you cover?
Commercial vans including the Transit, Sprinter, Vivaro and Crafter, along with other makes. Tell us the model when you call.

The short version
Vans need more cranking power than cars, so they need proper kit. We bring heavy duty jump packs for commercial vans, test the battery and charging every time, and can fit a new battery on the spot. Open 24 hours, with fleet billing for businesses.
