Decision guide
Jump Starting Versus a New Battery, How to Decide
About 4 minutes to read
A jump start and a battery replacement solve two different problems. A boost restores a battery that lost charge for a reason you can identify and fix, such as a door left ajar or a fortnight parked at an airport. A replacement is for a battery that can no longer hold or deliver charge, whatever you do to it.
The decision comes down to four facts: how old the battery is, what a load test says, how many times this has already happened, and whether the charging system is doing its job. Get those and the answer is usually obvious.
Boost or replace
Our roadside rule of thumb, in the order we apply it.
| What you see or hear | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Under three years, one off cause, passes load test | Healthy battery, temporary discharge | Boost and drive properly, or charge overnight |
| Four years or more, slow cranking in the cold | Capacity has fallen away | Replace, and have charging checked at the same time |
| Fails load test at any age | Cannot deliver cranking current | Replace. A warranty claim may apply if it is recent |
| Repeated flats with a good battery | Drain or charging fault | Investigate the cause before spending on a battery |
The four questions that decide it
How old is it, honestly
Under three years with a clear reason for the discharge, boost it. Over five years with cold morning hesitation, replace it. Between the two, let the test decide.
Was there an identifiable cause
Interior light left on, a long park, a heavy accessory load with the engine off. A one off cause with a young battery is exactly what a jump start is for.
What does the load test say
Cold cranking amps well below the figure on the label means the battery cannot do its job on a cold morning, no matter how good the resting voltage looks. That is a replacement.
How many times has this happened
Second or third boost in a few months is a battery, a drain or a charging fault. Repeated boosting of a failing battery just delays the inevitable while risking another stranding.
Is the charging system healthy
There is no point fitting a battery into a car that is not charging it. Output should be checked under load at the same time, otherwise the new battery follows the old one.
Where money gets wasted
- Buying a battery with no test, when the fault was a corroded terminal.
- Boosting the same car every week rather than testing it once.
- Fitting a new battery into a car with a charging fault.
- Choosing on price alone and ending up with the wrong type for a stop start car.
- Ignoring a warranty that would have covered a fairly new failed battery.
We can do either, in one visit
We turn up able to boost it, test it and, if the numbers say the battery is finished, supply and fit the correct replacement on the spot. You get the figures and the choice at the roadside rather than a booking for another day.
Would rather someone came out and did it?
24 hour mobile jumpstart across the West Midlands, with battery testing and replacement on the spot.
Questions
Q.Is it bad for a car to be jump started repeatedly?
It is hard on the starter and it leaves the battery cycling deeply, which accelerates its decline. Occasional is fine, routine is a sign something needs fixing.
Q.Can a battery pass a voltage check and still need replacing?
Regularly. Voltage shows state of charge, not capacity. A load or conductance test is what reveals whether it can still crank.
Q.Can you fit a battery at the roadside or does it need a garage?
Most are a roadside job, including boot mounted and stop start cars needing registration. Some awkward installations are better done off the road, and we will tell you if yours is one of them.
In short
Boost a young battery with a known cause that passes a load test. Replace an older one, a failing one or a repeat offender, and check charging at the same time. Ring 07886 626640 and we will bring the kit to do either.
