Flat battery help: what to do first
If the battery is flat, switch off lights, heater and anything plugged in, and stop trying to start the car once it only clicks, because repeated attempts drain what is left. Note what happened when you turned the key. If the car is somewhere unsafe, such as a live lane, move away from the vehicle and call the emergency services first.
A dead car battery can come from lights left on, a car standing unused, short journeys, cold mornings or a battery reaching the end of its life. A jump start gets the car going; the test afterwards tells you which of those it was.
Can a dead battery be recharged?
Often, yes. A battery that went flat because of a light left on or a car standing for a few weeks can usually be started and recharged by driving or with a charger. A battery that has failed internally, or has sat completely flat for a long time, may not recover and will not hold charge. Testing after the start is how you tell the difference, and if it has failed we can fit a replacement on the spot.

Usually, yes. Once the engine is running the alternator recharges the battery as you drive. We test the battery and charging system after the start so you know whether it is safe to rely on it.
