Jumpstart or Battery Replacement — Which Do You Need?

A jumpstart is the right answer when the battery is fundamentally sound and something drained it — lights left on, a door not shut, a long period standing, or a single unlucky cold night after short journeys. Charge returns, the car behaves, and there is nothing to buy.

Replacement is the right answer when the battery can no longer hold or deliver charge. Age, repeated deep discharges, a collapsed cell or heat damage all get a battery to that point, and no amount of jumping changes it. The test result decides — not the age on the label alone.

Key points at a glance

Jumpstart likely enough
Known cause of drain, battery otherwise healthy
Replacement likely needed
Fails a load or conductance test
Age guide
Three to six years is the typical service life
Deciding evidence
Cranking performance under load, not resting voltage

What this means in practice

  • We always jump first where it is safe — you get moving, and the test happens while the engine runs.
  • A battery that has been flattened deeply several times has usually lost capacity permanently, even if it takes a charge.
  • If the alternator is at fault, replacing the battery is money spent on the wrong component.
  • On-site replacement means correct type, correct fitment and coding where the vehicle needs it.
  • We will happily tell you a battery is fine — recommending one you do not need is a poor way to keep a customer.

Questions we get asked

Can you replace the battery there and then?

In most cases yes, for common fitments. Less common specifications may need sourcing, and we would rather do that than fit the wrong one.

How long will a jumped battery last?

If the cause was a one-off drain and the charging system is healthy, indefinitely. If the battery is worn, expect the problem back quickly.

Will you take the old battery away?

Yes — old batteries are removed for proper recycling rather than being left with you.
