Car Battery Keeps Going Flat, the Common Causes

A battery that goes flat repeatedly is telling you something specific, and the timing is the clue. Flat overnight, flat after four days standing, flat only in cold weather and flat after a long motorway run all point at different causes. Replacing the battery without finding the reason usually just buys you a few weeks.
Below, the causes are ordered by how often we actually find them on repeat callouts, with the pattern that identifies each one.
Causes in the order we find them

Short journeys that never replace the charge
A cold start can take a significant slice of capacity, and a ten minute drive with heated seats, screen and lights on may not put it back. Weeks of that leaves the battery permanently part charged, which also hardens the plates and shortens its life.

The battery has simply reached the end of its life
Capacity falls gradually, then falls off a cliff. Anything past roughly four to five years that struggles on a cold morning is a strong candidate, whatever the voltage reads at rest.

A parasitic drain with the car locked
Aftermarket trackers and dash cameras, a boot or glovebox light that never switches off, a failed door latch switch or a module that will not go to sleep. The signature is a car that is fine overnight but dead after a few days standing.

Weak or intermittent charging
A slipping belt, a failing alternator or a smart charging system that has never been told a new battery was fitted. Everything works, the car drives normally, and yet the battery never comes back up to full.

Poor connections and earths
Corroded clamps and a tired earth strap both cause voltage drop, which the charging system cannot see through. Cheap to fix and easy to miss.

Wrong battery type for a stop start car
A standard flooded battery fitted where an absorbent glass mat or enhanced flooded battery is specified will not survive the cycling, and will be back down within months.

What keeps people stuck
- Fitting a second new battery without ever testing for a drain.
- Trusting a resting voltage reading. A battery can read 12.5 volts and still fail under load.
- Idling to charge. Very little goes back in at idle.
- Skipping battery registration on cars that need it.
- Leaving a discharged battery to sit, which sulphates the plates and makes the loss permanent.
Get the cause found, not just the symptom cleared
We test the battery under load, check charging output and look for the obvious drains at the roadside, then tell you plainly whether it needs a battery, a connection repair or a workshop investigation. If a replacement is the answer, we can usually supply and fit it there and then.

Q.How long can a car sit before the battery goes flat?
A healthy battery in a car with a normal standby draw will usually still start after two to three weeks. If yours cannot manage a few days, something is wrong beyond ordinary standing.
Q.Will a smart charger fix it?
It will keep a car in occasional use healthy and it can recover a mildly discharged battery, but it cannot cure a drain or a failing alternator. It manages the symptom.
Q.Does a dash camera really flatten a battery?
A parking mode camera drawing continuously can do exactly that over a few days, especially with an older battery. Many are wired to a live feed rather than a switched one.
