How To Avoid a Flat Battery

The majority of the flat batteries we attend were avoidable. Short journeys that never restore what starting takes out, a vehicle standing for weeks, an ageing battery nobody has tested, or an accessory quietly drawing current around the clock — those four cover most of it.

Prevention is unglamorous but cheap. A test before winter, an occasional longer run, a maintenance charger for a vehicle that stands, and a moment's thought about what has been wired into the car recently will keep most drivers out of trouble entirely.

Key points at a glance

Biggest risk factor
Repeated short journeys with frequent starts
Second biggest
Long periods parked, especially in winter
Best single action
A battery test before the cold weather starts
Cheap insurance
A smart maintenance charger for standing vehicles

What this means in practice

  • A ten-minute trip often takes out more than it puts back, particularly with lights, heater and screen on.
  • Test the battery once it is past three years old rather than waiting for the symptoms.
  • Check that hard-wired dashcams and trackers use a proper low-voltage cutoff rather than a permanent live.
  • Make sure boot, glovebox and interior lights actually go out — they are easy to miss for days.
  • Keep terminals clean and the hold-down tight; vibration and corrosion both shorten life measurably.

Questions we get asked

How often should I drive a car that mostly sits?

A decent run of twenty to thirty minutes every couple of weeks helps considerably. If that is not realistic, a maintenance charger is the better answer than idling on the driveway.

Does idling charge the battery?

Only weakly. Charging output at idle is modest and often barely covers what the vehicle's own systems consume. Driving is far more effective.

When should I replace a battery preventatively?

When it tests below the vehicle's requirement, or when it is over three years old and already cranking slowly — especially if you depend on the vehicle for work.

Get ahead of it

Book a mobile battery test at home or at work before the weather does it for you.
