Battery Coding and Registration Explained

Vehicles with intelligent charging adjust their alternator output to suit the battery's age and state. They build a picture of the battery over time and charge it accordingly. Fit a new battery without telling the vehicle and it carries on charging as though the old, tired one is still there.

The consequences are not dramatic on day one, which is why the step gets skipped. Over months, though, an incorrectly charged battery ages faster, stop-start may never return, and the customer concludes the new battery was poor quality when in fact the installation was incomplete.

Key points at a glance

What it is
Telling the vehicle a new battery has been fitted
Where required
Many BMW, Mercedes, Audi, VW, Ford and stop-start models
How it's done
Through the OBD port with the correct tool
If skipped
Shortened life, stop-start may stay disabled

What this means in practice

  • Registration also matters when the replacement changes type, for example EFB to AGM, because the charging strategy differs.
  • Some vehicles need the battery's capacity and type entered, not just a reset — the detail matters.
  • Stop-start that refuses to return after a correct replacement is very often a missed registration.
  • We carry out this step as part of fitting on vehicles that require it, rather than treating it as an extra.
  • If a vehicle does not need registration, we will not invent a reason to charge for it.

Questions we get asked

How do I know whether my car needs it?

It depends on make, model and year. We check the vehicle's requirement before fitting rather than applying a blanket rule.

Can it be done at the roadside?

Yes — it is an OBD procedure and forms part of a mobile fitting on vehicles that require it.

What if a previous battery was never registered?

It can usually still be done retrospectively, though any life already lost to incorrect charging is not recoverable.

Making sure it is done properly

We register the battery where the vehicle needs it — ask us about your model.
