Car Won't Start After Fitting a New Battery
It is a frustrating position: you have paid for a battery and the car is no better. In most cases one of four things has happened — the battery was never the fault, the new one is the wrong specification, the terminals are not making a proper connection, or the vehicle needed the new battery registering to its charging system and that step was skipped.
Battery registration matters more than people realise. Many modern vehicles adapt charging to a battery's age and type. Fit a new battery without telling the car, and it keeps charging as if the old, tired one is still there — which shortens the new battery's life and can cause exactly the behaviour you were trying to cure.

What this means in practice
- We check specification against the vehicle's requirement — AGM, EFB and flooded are not interchangeable in either direction on stop-start cars.
- Terminal clamps need to be tight and clean on both the post and the lead; a shiny new battery hides a poor connection well.
- Where registration or coding is required, we carry out the OBD step rather than leaving it to chance.
- If the starter draws heavily or the immobiliser is unhappy, no battery will resolve it and we will tell you plainly.
- We also verify charging output afterwards, so the new battery is not being flattened or cooked by the alternator.
Questions we get asked
Do all cars need the battery registering?
No — plenty of older and simpler vehicles do not. But a large share of stop-start and premium models do, and skipping it is a common reason a new battery underperforms.
Can the wrong battery type damage the car?
It is more likely to damage the battery. A standard flooded unit in a stop-start application is worked far beyond its design and typically fails early.
Can you check a battery someone else fitted?
Yes. We test the battery, the fitment, the connections and the charging system, and tell you which part of the job was missed.
