Stop-Start Stopped Working — Usually the Battery
Stop-start is one of the first functions a car sacrifices when battery health drops. The system only shuts the engine down if it is confident it can restart it instantly, so as capacity fades the feature simply stops engaging — often with no warning message at all.
That makes it a genuinely useful early warning. A car whose stop-start has quietly disappeared over the last few weeks is frequently a car that will not start on the first properly cold morning of the season.

What this means in practice
- Normal, harmless reasons exist too — climate demand, engine not yet warm, steering off centre, or a recent restart — so we confirm rather than assume.
- A battery sensor on the negative terminal monitors current and health on many cars; a disturbed or corroded sensor connection can also disable the feature.
- Fitting a standard flooded battery to a stop-start car often kills the function permanently as well as wearing the battery out early.
- Where the system stays off after a correct replacement, registration through the OBD port is usually the missing step.

Is it damaging to drive with stop-start disabled?
No — the car is protecting itself. But it is a signal worth acting on, because the underlying battery condition rarely improves on its own.
Can I just ignore it?
You can, and many people do until the car refuses to start. A ten-minute battery test tells you whether you have months or weeks.
Will a new battery bring the feature straight back?
Usually, once the correct type is fitted and registered. If it does not return, that points to a sensor or system fault rather than the battery.
