Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) Explained
Cold cranking amps describe how much current a battery can deliver in freezing conditions while holding a usable voltage. It is the number that decides whether your engine turns on a January morning. Amp hours describe stored energy, and reserve capacity describes how long the battery can run the vehicle's electrics if charging fails — useful, but not the starting figure.
Under-specifying CCA is a common way to save a little and lose a lot. A battery that is marginal when new becomes inadequate as it ages, and the vehicle's own requirement does not fall just because the replacement was cheaper.

What this means in practice
- Diesel engines need substantially more cranking current than equivalent petrol engines, particularly when cold.
- CCA falls as a battery ages, so the margin you start with is the margin you spend over the following years.
- Different rating standards exist, so comparing two batteries means comparing like with like.
- Higher CCA in the correct case size does no harm; a smaller case with lower CCA to fit a budget usually does.

Can I fit a higher CCA battery than standard?
Yes, provided the case size, terminal layout and type are correct. The starter draws what it needs; the extra headroom simply ages more gracefully.
Does higher CCA mean it lasts longer?
Not directly, but a battery with more margin stays above the vehicle's requirement for longer as it degrades.
Why does my battery test lower than its label?
Because the label states its rating when new. Measured CCA drops with age, sulphation and heat damage — that gap is the useful diagnostic.
