Car Battery Sizes and Type Codes Explained

Battery fitment is defined by more than voltage. UK type numbers such as 096, 027 or 019 are shorthand for a combination of case dimensions, terminal positions and hold-down arrangement. European DIN and ETN codes describe the same thing more precisely, and suppliers cross-reference between them.

Getting this wrong causes real problems: leads that will not reach, a battery that cannot be clamped down, or a positive terminal sitting close to a bonnet brace. A loose battery also vibrates itself to an early death, which is why the hold-down is not optional.

Key points at a glance

UK type number
e.g. 096, 027, 019 — case and terminal shorthand
ETN code
Nine-digit European reference used across brands
Terminal layout
Positive left or right changes fitment entirely
Hold-down type
Base clamp or top bar — must be reused correctly

What this means in practice

  • Two batteries with identical capacity can be completely different fitments — dimensions and terminal side decide.
  • Vans frequently use larger cases with higher CCA than cars of the same age, so a car battery is not a stopgap.
  • Some vehicles carry a vent tube requirement; blanking or ignoring it is not acceptable on boot-mounted batteries.
  • We check the existing battery, the tray and the vehicle's specification rather than trusting whatever was fitted last.
  • Correct clamping protects both the battery and the surrounding components in a collision or over rough ground.

Questions we get asked

Can I fit a physically larger battery for more capacity?

Only if it fits the tray, clamps down securely and the leads reach without strain. Otherwise it is a safety issue, not an upgrade.

How do I find my battery's code?

It is normally printed on the top label. If the label is unreadable, dimensions, terminal layout and the vehicle details identify it.

Do you carry stock for common fitments?

We carry the common car and van fitments and can source less common specifications quickly rather than fitting a compromise.

Need the right battery, first time?

We confirm the correct fitment on site before anything is fitted.
