What To Do After a Jump Start

The jump start is the easy part. What decides whether you are stuck again tomorrow is the hour after it, and most people get that hour wrong. They leave the car idling on the drive, or drive five minutes to work, park up, and are surprised when it is dead the next morning.
An alternator prioritises the car's running loads before it puts anything back into the battery, and at idle its output is low. A deeply discharged battery can need several hours of charge to get back to a usable state, and no amount of engine running at a standstill will deliver that quickly. Here is what actually helps, in order, and how to work out whether the battery is recoverable at all.
The hour and the week after

First two minutes: turn things off, not on
Heated rear screen, heated seats, air conditioning, headlights where legal to do so and the stereo all take current straight off the alternator that could be going into the battery. Give the charging system a clear run at it.

First half hour: drive, do not idle
Aim for twenty five to forty minutes of driving with some steady road speed rather than crawling. Idling on the drive produces a fraction of the charge current of a car at cruising revs, which is why the classic overnight failure follows a garden idle.

Same day: put it on a mains charger if you have one
A smart charger overnight will do far more for a deeply flat battery than any drive, because it can hold the correct absorption voltage for hours. If you own one and the car is on a drive, use it. This is the single most effective step on this list.

Next morning: the honest test
If it starts crisply the following morning after standing overnight, the battery is holding charge. If it cranks slowly or clicks, it is either at the end of its life or something is draining it while parked. One good start proves nothing on its own.

Within a few days: get it tested properly
A conductance and load test tells you the battery's actual state of health, not just its voltage. A battery can read a respectable resting voltage and still collapse under a cranking load. Alternator output and ripple should be checked at the same visit.

Ongoing: fix the cause, not the symptom
Short trips, an interior light left on, a boot latch that never switches off, an aftermarket dash camera hardwired badly, or a faulty module that will not go to sleep are the usual repeat offenders. Until the cause is found, the boosts keep coming.

Read your car's behaviour the day after the boost before you spend anything.

The habits that cause repeat callouts
- Do not idle the car on the driveway and count that as charging.
- Do not switch the engine off at the shops five minutes after a boost.
- Do not assume a battery that started once is fine.
- Do not ignore a battery warning light that appears after the jump. That is a charging problem, not a battery problem.
- Do not keep boosting the same car every morning. The starter and the alternator both pay for that eventually.

Q.How long should I drive after a jump start?
Twenty five to forty minutes of real driving with some steady road speed, not stop start crawling and not idling. If you can put it on a mains charger overnight instead, that is better still.
Q.Why did my car go flat again the next day?
Either the battery cannot hold charge any more, or something is drawing current while the car is locked and asleep. A jump start only ever puts surface charge in, so it hides both of those problems for a day.
Q.Is idling enough to recharge a flat battery?
No. Alternator output at idle is low and the car's own running loads take priority. Idling might replace what the start used, but it will not refill a deeply discharged battery.
