How Long To Drive After a Jumpstart
A jumpstart puts in just enough energy to turn the engine. Everything after that is the alternator's job, and recharging a deeply discharged battery takes considerably longer than most people expect — a five-minute trip to the shops will leave you exactly where you started tomorrow morning.
Idling is the least effective option. Charging output at idle is modest, and the vehicle's own systems consume much of it. A steady drive at road speed puts far more back, which is why we suggest a proper run rather than sitting on the driveway with the engine ticking over.

What this means in practice
- Steady road speed produces far better charging than stop-start town driving at the same duration.
- Turning off the rear screen, heated seats and unnecessary charging speeds up the recharge noticeably.
- A deeply discharged battery may need mains charging to fully recover; the alternator is designed to maintain, not to resurrect.
- If the car will not restart after that run, the battery has lost capacity and needs replacing.

Questions we get asked
Can I just leave it running on the drive?
It is much less effective than driving, and on many vehicles it barely improves the state of charge at all. A proper run is worth far more.
Should I turn the heater off?
Reducing electrical load helps, though not at the expense of safety — keep lights and wipers on if conditions need them.
What if it will not start again the next morning?
Then either the battery has lost capacity, something is draining it, or the charging system is not doing its job. All three are things we test for.
