Car Starts After a Jump Then Cuts Out

An engine that runs only while the jump pack is connected is telling you something specific: it is being kept alive by the pack, not by its own charging system. Disconnect the clamps and it stops. That is a charging or connection problem far more often than a simple flat battery.

The other version is subtler — the car runs fine for five or ten minutes and then dies on the way home. That pattern usually means the alternator is producing something, but not enough to cover the ignition, fuel pump, lights and heater once the battery has nothing left to give.

Key points at a glance

Dies the moment clamps come off
Charging output or main earth fault
Dies after 5–20 minutes
Weak alternator output under load
Dies only at idle
Often low output at low rpm, or an idle fault
Common overlooked cause
Loose, corroded or under-torqued battery terminals

What this means in practice

  • We check both terminals and the main engine earth strap before anything else — a loose earth mimics a dead alternator perfectly.
  • Voltage is measured with the pack disconnected so we see what the car can actually produce on its own.
  • We load the system deliberately (headlights, rear screen, blower) because faults hide at light load.
  • A battery that has been deeply discharged repeatedly may no longer accept charge, so it never supports the engine again.
  • If the car cannot sustain itself safely, we say so rather than sending you out to break down again in traffic.

Questions we get asked

Is it safe to keep jump starting it?

Repeatedly jump starting a car that keeps dying can damage the battery further and, in some cases, stress the charging system. It is fine as a one-off to get off a live road, but it is not a repair.

Could it be a fuel or immobiliser fault instead?

It can be. A very low battery can confuse the immobiliser or body control module on modern cars, and the symptoms overlap. We check voltage first because it is the cheapest thing to rule out.

Will a new battery stop it stalling?

Only if the charging system is proven healthy. We test that before recommending a battery so you are not paying twice.

Keeps cutting out on you?

We will get it running and tell you whether it is safe to drive before you set off.
