Corroded Battery Terminals and Bad Connections

Corrosion is the most under-diagnosed cause of a no-start. A crusty deposit on the post acts as an insulator, and the starter cannot pull hundreds of amps through it no matter how good the battery is. The car may still light up, lock, unlock and play the radio while refusing entirely to crank.

It also causes intermittent faults that drive people mad — starts fine three days running, then nothing; random warning lights; a car that starts after someone wiggles a lead. That inconsistency is the fingerprint of a connection problem rather than a dying battery.

What this means in practice

  • Cleaning means removing the clamp and dressing both the post and the inside of the clamp, not just brushing the outside.
  • Clamps must be torqued properly — over-tightening deforms soft lead posts and creates a fresh problem.
  • Protective grease or terminal spray after cleaning slows the corrosion returning, especially on older vehicles.
  • Heavy corrosion that keeps coming back can indicate overcharging or a leaking case, both of which are worth knowing about.
  • A poor earth strap produces identical symptoms and is frequently overlooked when only the battery end is inspected.

Questions we get asked

Is battery corrosion dangerous?

The deposits are acidic or caustic depending on type and should not be handled with bare hands or rubbed into your eyes. We deal with it with the correct protection and clean up properly.

Can I clean it myself?

Carefully, with the negative disconnected first and appropriate protection. If you are not confident disconnecting a battery on a modern car, it is not worth the risk of a slip across live terminals.

Does corrosion mean the battery is finished?

Not necessarily. Plenty of batteries clean up and carry on. We test capacity afterwards so you know whether you have fixed it or merely postponed it.

Suspect a connection fault?

We clean, re-torque and test properly — and tell you if the battery itself is still good.
