Can You Jump Start a Car With Stop Start?

Stop start cars can be jump started, but they are less forgiving than an older car for two reasons. They use enhanced flooded or absorbent glass mat batteries that behave differently under charge, and they carry a battery monitoring sensor on the negative terminal that the charging strategy relies on. Clamp onto the wrong point and the car does not know a jump ever happened.
There is also usually a designated jump point rather than an exposed battery. On plenty of modern cars the battery lives in the boot, under a seat or behind a wheel arch liner, with a positive stud under a red cover in the engine bay and a marked earth stud nearby. Use those, not the battery.

Doing it properly on a stop start car
Find the designated jump points first
Look for a red plastic cover marked positive in the engine bay and a bolt or bracket marked as the earth point. If you cannot find them, check the handbook rather than guessing.
Never clamp past the battery monitoring sensor
The sensor sits on the negative post and measures every amp in and out. Clamping directly to the negative post bypasses it, so the car keeps charging to the old strategy and the battery ends up chronically undercharged.
Switch everything off before connecting
These cars wake up a lot of modules on ignition. Lights, screens, ventilation and infotainment all off so the boost goes to the starter.
Give it longer at raised revs
Absorbent glass mat batteries accept charge quickly but a deeply flat one still needs a few minutes before it will support a start. Do not crank straight away.
Expect stop start to stay off afterwards
The system will not shut the engine down until the charging strategy is satisfied the battery has recovered. That is normal for a few journeys, and if it never comes back the battery health is the reason.
Get a replacement matched and registered
If it needs a new battery, it needs the right type and, on most stop start cars, registering to the charging system. Fitting a standard flooded battery instead saves money once and costs it twice.
Where these go wrong
- Earthing to the negative post and wondering why the battery never fills afterwards.
- Fitting a cheaper flooded battery into a stop start car.
- Skipping battery registration, which leaves the car charging as if the old battery were still fitted.
- Treating a lost stop start function as a system fault when it is a battery health report.
- Assuming an electric or hybrid car is jumped at the traction battery. It never is, only the 12 volt side is involved.

Q.Will jump starting a stop start car damage the electronics?
Not if it is done through the designated jump points in the right order. The damage risk comes from reversed polarity, thin leads and earthing to the wrong place.
Q.Why has stop start stopped working since the battery went flat?
The car will not use the function until it is confident in battery health. After a deep discharge that confidence often never returns, which usually means the battery is finished.
Q.Can I jump start a hybrid, and can a hybrid jump start me?
You can usually jump a hybrid's 12 volt system through its marked jump points. Using a hybrid as a donor is generally advised against by manufacturers, because its 12 volt system is not designed to supply cranking current to another car.
