Jump Pack: Buy, Borrow or Call Someone Out?
About 5 minutes to read
A jump pack is a portable battery with clamps, and it is a brilliant thing to have in the boot. The trouble is that most people start thinking about one at the exact moment they need it, with the car already flat. At that point the real question is not which pack is best. It is whether buying one, borrowing one or calling someone who already carries a professional booster will get you moving soonest.
This page is for that moment. It weighs up the three routes honestly, including when a pack will not help at all because the battery is beyond saving.
Buy, borrow or call out
What each route really involves when the car is already flat.
| What you see or hear | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Buy a pack now | You need to get to a shop, and a new pack often arrives only part charged | Worth it for next time. Rarely the fastest fix today |
| Borrow a pack from a friend | Quick if someone nearby has one charged and sized for your engine | Check it is charged and rated for your engine size before relying on it |
| Call a mobile jumpstart | Someone brings a professional booster to the car | Best when you have no kit, a large diesel or van, or need a battery test |
| Battery cracked, swollen or will not hold charge | No pack will fix it | Battery replacement, ideally fitted where the car is |
How to decide in a couple of minutes
Think about how the car failed
Lights left on or a car unused for a few weeks usually means a healthy battery that is simply flat, so a boost from any source will likely work. A car that has been slow to start for a while points to a tired battery, and a boost may only buy you a day.
Match the pack to the engine
Small packs are fine for small petrol engines. Big diesels and commercial vans need far more cranking current, and a small pack can drain itself on the first attempt without turning the engine at all.
Check any borrowed pack is actually charged
A pack that has sat in a garage for months may be nearly empty. Most have a charge indicator. If it shows low, it will not help.
Weigh up the time
Travelling to buy a pack, charging it and then trying it can take longer than a callout. If you need to be somewhere soon, that often settles it.
Think about what happens after the jump
A pack gets the engine running but tells you nothing about why the battery went flat. A mobile callout can test the battery and charging, and fit a new battery on the spot if the test says it is finished.
Where people go wrong
- Buying the cheapest pack in a hurry and finding it cannot turn over a diesel.
- Connecting a pack the wrong way round. Many have reverse polarity protection, but not all do.
- Leaving the pack clamped on after the engine starts and letting it try to charge the flat battery.
- Jumping a battery that is visibly damaged. Stop and get it replaced instead.
- Assuming a successful boost means the battery is fine, then being stuck again the next morning.

Questions
Q.Is it worth buying a jump pack?
For next time, yes, especially if you drive an older car or leave it unused for periods. Keep it charged and check its rating matches your engine.
Q.Will a small jump pack start a van?
Often not. Vans and large diesels need a much bigger cranking current than a small car pack can supply.
Q.Can you come out if I have already tried a pack?
Yes. Tell us what happened when you tried it, because that helps show whether the battery is flat or finished.
Q.What if the battery needs replacing?
We supply and fit branded batteries on site, matched to the vehicle, with warranty included, and take the old one for recycling.
The short version
If the car is already flat and you have no pack, borrowing a charged one sized for your engine is the quickest free option. Buying one is for next time. If you have no kit, drive a van or large diesel, or want to know why the battery died, a mobile callout with a professional booster is usually quickest.
