Jump Leads vs Jump Packs — What Actually Works
Jump leads borrow current from another vehicle; a jump pack brings its own. The difference in outcome usually comes down to cable cross-section and connection quality. Thin, budget leads with light clamps simply cannot carry the current a cold diesel starter demands, which is why so many roadside attempts end in a warm cable and a car that still will not turn.
A professional lithium pack sidesteps most of that. There is no donor vehicle to position, no risk of dragging a second battery down, and output is delivered through short, heavy cables. It is also considerably safer around modern electronics, since good packs include reverse polarity and spark protection.

What this means in practice
- Cable length and thickness matter more than the headline amp figure printed on a package.
- Clamp quality decides how much of that current reaches the battery post — poor clamps waste it as heat.
- Reversed polarity for even a moment can damage control modules, and it is the single most common DIY mistake.
- Many modern vehicles specify remote jump points rather than the battery itself, particularly where the battery is in the boot.
- If a properly rated pack will not start the vehicle, that is diagnostic information, not a failed attempt.

Are consumer jump packs worth buying?
A decent one is genuinely useful for a car, provided you keep it charged — a pack left in a boot for two years is usually flat when you need it. For diesel vans, the small ones frequently fall short.
Can jumping from another car damage either vehicle?
It can if the connection order is wrong or polarity is reversed. Damage to charging systems and electronics from careless jumping is not rare.
Why call someone out if I own leads?
Because a callout includes testing. You find out whether the battery, alternator or something else caused it, instead of repeating the same jump next week.
