Quick answer guide

Who Can I Call to Jump Start My Car?

About 5 minutes to read

When the dashboard stays dark and the starter barely turns, the question is rarely how a jump start works. It is who you can actually get hold of right now. There are four realistic answers, and which one is right depends on whether you already pay for breakdown cover, whether anyone nearby owns leads, and how soon you need to be moving.

This page walks through each option in plain terms, what each one needs from you, and the details worth having ready before you pick up the phone. If you decide a mobile callout is the answer, our number is at the bottom and it is answered 24 hours a day.

Your options side by side

Pick the row that matches your situation, then follow the matching step below.

What you see or hearWhat it meansWhat to do
You pay for breakdown coverYour provider will send someone as part of the policyRing the number on your card or app first, and ask for an honest wait estimate
A friend or neighbour owns leads and a working carA free jump is possible if both of you are confident doing itFollow the safe lead order and keep the donor engine running while you crank
It is office hours and the car is outside a garageThe garage may help, but usually on their scheduleAsk whether they can come out today or only once you get the car to them
No cover, no leads, and you need to go nowA mobile jumpstart callout comes to where the car is parkedRing a local callout service, give your exact location and the make and model

How to make each call go smoothly

  1. Check whether you already have cover

Plenty of people have breakdown cover without realising it: bundled with a bank account, a new car warranty or an insurance policy. Look in your banking app or glovebox paperwork before paying for anything. If you have it, use it, but ask for a realistic arrival window so you can judge whether waiting makes sense.

  2. If a friend is helping, agree the plan first

Decide who clamps what before anything is connected. Red to the flat battery positive, red to the donor positive, black to the donor negative, final black to bare metal on the flat car. Keep the clamps apart, keep hands clear of the fan, and stop if the flat battery is cracked, swollen or smells strongly.

  3. If you are ringing a mobile service, describe the car

Say whether it is a car or a van, the make and model, and whether it is petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric. A long wheelbase van or a big diesel needs a heavier booster than a small hatchback, so the right kit comes out first time.

  4. Give an exact location, not a street name

A house number, a car park level and bay, or a pin dropped in WhatsApp saves time. Say whether the bonnet can be reached, because a car nosed tight against a wall may need moving before anyone can get to the battery.

  5. Ask for the price before anyone sets off

Any reputable callout will tell you what the job costs on the phone. With us you get an honest quote before we set off and there is no callout fee, so you are not committed until you agree.

  6. Ask what happens if a jump is not enough

A battery that has failed will not hold a charge however many times it is boosted. It helps to know in advance whether the person coming can test the battery and charging system and fit a replacement on the spot, or whether you will need a second visit.

Things that waste time when you call

  • Ringing round without knowing your exact location, so every call starts with directions.
  • Assuming breakdown cover does not apply at home. Many policies need a home start add on, so check before you rule it out.
  • Letting a well meaning passer by clamp onto the flat battery negative on a car with a battery sensor, which can confuse the charging system afterwards.
  • Cranking the starter over and over while you wait, which drains the last of the charge and can overheat the starter motor.
  • Driving straight home after the jump and switching off, so the battery never gets enough charge back to start again tomorrow.

Questions

Q.Can I call someone to jump start my car at home?

Yes. A mobile jumpstart service comes to the car wherever it is parked, including a driveway, a street outside your house or a residents car park.

Q.Who can jump start my car in the middle of the night?

Your breakdown provider if you have cover, or a 24 hour mobile service. We are open 24 hours, day, night, weekends and bank holidays included.

Q.Should I call breakdown cover or a jumpstart service?

If you have cover, it is already paid for, so it is usually worth trying first. A direct callout makes sense when you have no cover or when the wait you are quoted is too long for you.

Q.What should I have ready before I ring?

Your exact location, the make and model, the fuel type, and a description of what the car does when you turn the key. Clicking, slow cranking and complete silence point to different faults.

The short version

Try any breakdown cover you already have, accept help from someone with leads only if you both know the safe order, and ring a 24 hour mobile service when you need someone out now. Whoever you call, give an exact location, describe the car, and ask for the price before they set off.
